Chinese teen wins weightlifting gold
Long Qingquan of China finished ahead of his Vietnamese opponent to take gold on Sunday. Qingquan took gold in the 56-kilogram category by lifting 292 kg overall. Qingquan, who had never competed internationally, only missed one lift. Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam was just tow kg back to take the silver. Eko Irawan of Indonesia won bronze. I don't mind that I didn't get the record. The other two women on the podium were each eight kg back. Melanie Roach of the United States finished sixth. Canadian gymnast Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs qualified for the women's individual all-round final on Aug. 15 at the Beijing Olympics. Swimmers Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., and Colin Russell of Oshawa, Ont., advanced to the semifinals of the men's 200-metre freestyle at the 2008 Beijng Games. Canadian badminton player Anna Rice has won her second match at the Games, beating Jeannine Cicognini of Switzerland in the round of 32 Sunday. Ottawa's Andrew Dabeka was eliminated.
